Protecting Your Mental Health in Challenging Times: Practical Tips to Avoid Burnout and Stress

World Health Organization (WHO), defines ‘Health’ as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

In a depressed economy (such as, the Nigerian economy), where persons are forced to work multiple jobs and encouraged to engage in multiple streams of income to have a decent standard of living, coupled with the ever-increasing food inflation and outbreak of communicable diseases such as cholera; excessive engagement in strenuous activities can reduce the body’s immunity, lead to exhaustion, burnout and affect the state of one’s mental health.

In the light of all these, here are some practical tips to avoid burn out and mental exhaustion.

🌼Recognize and track your stress levels

🌼Create a habit of journaling

🌼Seek professional help from a coach, therapist, when needed

🌼Build a support network

🌼Get enough exercise

🌼Speak up for yourself

🌼Learn breath-management techniques

🌼Create a healthy work-life balance

🌼Develop a healthy sleep schedule

🌼Have a healthy diet and avoid excess caffeine, carbonated drinks and junk food

🌼Practice meditation

🌼Learn to set boundaries and say no
